What do readers love most about fantasy books?
I’ve been asking that question to everyone who picks up a free copy of my fantasy novels for the last few years. Sometimes people answer it is the adventure they love, more often they will say the characters. But invariably, most often they will mention the magic and the world.
In fantasy, the setting with its myriad amazing creatures, strange races, and magic is as important as the characters.
It is why we as writers spend months world building. Wouldn’t it be awesome to shortcut all that work and still have a top-notch fantasy world to start, finally, writing about?
Yeah, I thought so too.
That is why I created a cheat sheet that boiled down the key aspects of what it takes to make a truly unique world for your novel. More than that, create a nuanced setting that affects the characters who are part of it.
Don’t you hate it when you read a book and the characters feel like they could have been dropped into any background and still act the same?
I do. I want a richly woven backdrop with history, characters born and raised amid the hardships and wealth of a world that feels so real I could open a door and step into its streets and forests. I just don’t want to spend a decade creating it. Because there is still a story, at least one, to write once the world building is done!
7 essential steps
That is what I came up with. There are seven interlinked steps to creating an awesome world for your novel, one with depth, history, uniqueness, magic, and peopled by characters born to it. Follow the steps and you will have a world and be ready to write. Heck, you’ll have created a world burgeoning with stories to be told.
Do you want to know what the 7 steps are?
I’ll tell you because I’m not selling the secrets. I’m giving them away. Really! Including tips on map making, creating unique cultures to fit your world, and advanced character development tips.
