I’ve been tagged!
Thanks Bruce, for passing along the challenge and including me in your list of 7.
According to Bruce’s post, the rules are:
- Go to page 7 or 77 in your current manuscript
- Go to line 7
- Copy down the next seven lines/sentences exactly as they are
- Tag 7 other authors
Like Bruce, I have a few manuscripts in various stages of (non)completion: a Companion to Born of Water, Born of Water‘s sequel Rule of Fire, and Year in a Yurt. I think the Companion is the closest to being ready for the public, but it is a compilation of the background stories for the characters in Born of Water as well as the histories and cultures of the cities and their people. It has information that never even made it to the novel (but was so much fun to come up with!). As much fun as that one is, it is more descriptive than truly written. So I think I will go with Rule of Fire for this game!
Rule of Fire begins with the group of friends lost in the Alin Mountains as they attempt to journey back to Lus na Sithchaine and the Kith. It is late fall and the mountain air holds frost and they are trying to find a pass to go north . . .

Kailal opened his mouth to say something, but hesitated. Ria did not wait. She bounded forward and leapt into the air. She did not come back down.
.
She wasn’t sure how she knew what to do. Maybe it was like Niri had once said to her: that using your birth element was as easy as knowing how to smile. One moment Ria was a soil bound girl and the next she was a hawk on the wing.
.
Updrafts hit her stretched feathers. Ria let instinct tell her how to correct her flight: to soar along the ground and out into the abyss of air between the peaks. The world fell away below her.
.
At least I’ve gotten beyond page 7, but I haven’t hit page 77 yet! Now who to pick for my victims . . . err fellow writers? I think it may be time to hit up my old writing group! 🙂
