Last weekend was the release of Spirit of Life, the final book in my epic fantasy trilogy, the Rise of the Fifth Order. And while I’m excited to have completed the series, I’m also not quite ready to move on to talk about my next project.
Oh yes, I’m still writing and not just starting a new project, mind you. I’m neck deep in it!
See, that is how it goes in the life of a writer. I’ve been working on my next project for several months now. And in all honesty, part of it is a rewrite of a novel I shared with my writing group… before writing Born of Water! So… let’s NOT add up the years I’ve been bouncing this idea around. OK?
See that is the funny thing about writers (well, there are LOTS of funny things about writers!). Writers write. Not always in order of release and not always a whole novel front to back with no breaks in between. Really, it is amazing that we can produce anything as comprehensive as a whole novel… much less a trilogy or a series (the process of comprehensive rough idea compilation is called ‘editing’)! I feel really accomplished. 🙂
And even though the Rise of the Fifth Order is over, I expect I’ll still post about it. I’m proud of the series and love the story. Actually, I never expected to discover so many unexplored nibblings in the last chapter (from which I took this post title!). Zhao is finally ready to face his home. And as I wrote in my post on the Guild of Dreams, may be heading into a rather rebellious face of his life. Like he wasn’t already trouble. And Darag… I never thought to see him in such inner turmoil that he was ready to confront the Ashanti… power for power if necessary… to give them Jeif’s message. Hmmm… I should tell him to take Khodan. Oh wait, Khodan has to deal with Isha! And exactly how many people said that Sinika NEVER should be allowed near the Sphere of Fire. You just know there is a problem brewing there…
So, while I don’t intend to continue writing further about the world of Myrrah, even I’m curious at the setup left at the end of Spirit of Life. I may be going back there. At some point. With a stand alone novel… or a new series. Oh boy.
Anyway, I am currently in the thick of my next project. Which I have every intention of finishing before going on to something else. I plan on beginning the release of the into short stories by August and I’ll be talking about them more here too, because I’ve learned a lot from my new project such as: character intentions, writing short stories, tension that comes from things other than dangerous Elementals, and solving problems without magic. This project is much stronger on character building to create tension. There is no magic and so no big need to create ‘wow’ factors with amazing abilities. It is a fun challenge after writing high fantasy!
I have some hopes for a few tweaks to the blog too. Maybe serializing some stories, either fantasy or some of the stories to my new WIP. We’ll see how the summer progresses before I make that promise though.
For now, I’m happy to sit back and look at my completed series, remembering a promise I made to get it formatted for CreateSpace! Yah, lots of projects going on. As always, stay tuned!
